The City of Guelph

Bus rides for students are free! (Well, kind of). Your tuition covers unlimited use of Guelph Transit. You can expect a bus to arrive at any downtownwards stop every 20 minutes before 6:45 p.m., Monday to Friday. Buses arrive every 30 minutes after 6:45 p.m., Monday to Friday and all day Saturdays and Sundays.

Note: Sunday service stops at around 6:30.

The apply named “magic bus” is a late night shuttle bus that runs from City Hall (Downtown) to campus starting at 12:15 am on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, with the last shuttle leaving at 3:45am. Practice your singing voice and learn the words to Ole!

Protip: If you live near Stone Road Mall forget about catching the 52 to campus. It’s a long route and it usually gets full by the time it makes it to the mall, wait for the 50 express instead.

Taxi Service

Guelph has two major taxi services, Red Top Taxi, and Canadian Cab.  Both are very similar, both take all major cards (including debit and credit) and accept meal cards as payment.

Red Top has a slightly cheaper fare, but you would really only notice a difference if you were traveling far.  Canadian Cab has the largest fleet in Guelph and has its headquarters conveniently placed across the street from Trapper’s.  I suggest trying them both out then placing your loyalty with the one you like best.

Red Top: 519–821-1700

Canadian Cab: 519-824-3110

Protip: Don’t try and get faster service by calling both cab services at once, they can and will refuse service to you if they catch you doing this.

Protip 2: Frosh week and holidays are bad nights to catch cabs, try the magic bus or just walk.  My first week in Guelph I waited 2 hours for a cab before realizing I could walk back to res in 20 minutes.

The Sleeman Centre

Home of The Guelph Storm, the Sleeman Centre is in the heart of downtown Guelph. The facility hosts events such as concerts, public skating, and of course, lots of hockey. Tickets are very affordable and the small venue is perfect for catching a glimpse of future hockey stars.

Protip: Get there early, or reserve a seat with a view of the game at the Sleeman Bar, its like upgrading to box seats for free.

Stone Road Mall

This mall offers more than you would expect from a smaller city mall. Although not offering all that many unique stores, Stone Road Mall will make you feel at home with all the retailers you recognize. The recent renovations give this mall a modern look, and most of the stores are geared toward students. The best part is that it’s only a stone’s throw away from campus. (Please excuse the lousy pun)

Protip: The Island Fries with curry sauce at Carribean Queen is worth the trip to the mall.

Galaxy Theatre

It is Guelph’s only multiplex theatre but it’s a good one. It features stadium style seating and a full range of snacks and treats. The only problem with this theatre is that it is a little out of the way. By bus it can take 45 minutes to an hour to get to from campus, and a cab ride will set you back $20. If you are going with a group of friends I highly recommend splitting the cab. If your going with a date, I shouldn't have to tell you to take the cab.
